Review: L’Oreal Skin Perfection Day Moisturiser

I recently bought L’Oreal’s Skin Perfection Day Moisturiser simply because I was in need of a new moisturiser. As a teenager, like many teenagers, I got spots, but now they’ve disappeared, I can say that I’m a lot more content with my skin (not to say that my skin is now perfect; I still get occasional spots and random dry spots). However, I now suffer the aftermath – my main skin concern now is redness / hyperpigmentation, the darkening of an area of skin from forces such as inflammation and sun damage. Basically, dark spots. Which is what my skin is now. Dark spots.

I’ve struggled to find a high-street moisturiser that helps fade dark spots effectively; I’ve tried Garnier’s Dark Spot Corrector http://www.garnier.co.uk/skin-care/beauty/garnier/dark-spot-corrector/dark-spot-correctorgclid=CjwKEAiArqKmBRCOj_

which was good value, but just didn’t work for me at all. So, I decided that I didn’t have much to lose with a relatively-priced moisturiser that called itself “Skin Perfection” (as of now it’s £9.99 at Boots, but is typically £14.99 at most retailers).

The packaging of the product is very professional-looking and persuasive. It’s in a glass tub, which makes it seem like a high-end beauty product, but personally I’d prefer plastic – I’m clumsy, and the heaviness of the glass makes it a little inconvenient for travel. The actual product is a very pale pink, and has a fresh fragrance to it.

The whole range looks very impressive and convincing. With this product, L’Oreal claim that “Skin Perfection Day Moisturiser helps transform the appearance of skin quality, as if perfected. Pores look virtually undetectable, tone looks more even, skin texture feels silky-soft.”. After instant use of this moisturiser, my skin feels fresh and soft, so they may be correct about its effect on texture. However, over the 6 weeks or so that I’ve been using this, day and night, the moisturiser hasn’t made any dramatic difference to my skin, appearance-wise. My pores have remained the same size as before use, and the tone of my skin doesn’t look any more even.

Also, as you could assume that L’Oreal encourage you to make use of the Skin Perfection range as part of your daily routine, I’m surprised they don’t do a night moisturiser to complement the day one. The Day Moisturiser is the only kind of moisturiser in the range – the other products are a serum, BB cream, an eye cream, an anti-fatigue “perk up” cream, and what seems to be a primer (there is also a Skin Perfection cleansing range). I wanted a single moisturiser that I could use for both day and night, so fuck the rules, I’m using a day moisturiser as a night moisturiser.

The verdict: as a daily moisturiser, this works fine and performs the basic function of moisturising skin. While it’s made my skin feel soft and moisturised, it’s done little to improve the appearance of my skin. However, I do wonder if the effect would be enhanced if I introduced other products from the Skin Perfection range into my daily routine alongside the moisturiser, as shown by their skin care “ritual”:

Overall? I’d give it a 6/10. Above average. I’ll throw in an extra 0.5/10 for generosity.
